Brenna Helmstutler (2003): Was promoted to Interim Coordinator, Library Services for Natural & Health Sciences at Georgia State University Library, Atlanta as of June 1.

Kathy Shields (2009) & Lynda Kellam (2007): Wrote a chapter for The Generation X Librarian: Essays on Leadership, Technology, Pop Culture, Social Responsibility, and Professional Identity  published in May 2011.

Lynda Kellam (2007): Published her first book, Numeric Data Services and Sources for the General Reference Librarian, in June 2011.

Johnny Davis (2006):  Technology Librarian, Stanly County Public Library: I’ve been working in Stanly County for almost a year now, and it has been a great experience. My department handles all library systems and technical services. Needless to say, I wear many hats!

Lynda Kellam (2007): Data Services Librarian at UNCG:  I just had an article (co-authored with Michele Hayslett) published in IASSIST Quarterly, the primary data librarianship journal, for a special issue on data librarianship and data sources.

Nominate UNCG Alumni for the Kovacs Award!

The LIS Alumni Association is accepting nominations for the Kovacs Award for Outstanding Alumni Achievement. You can read about the award and its expectations below. Nominate someone for exceptional achievement using our handy form!

The Kovacs Award for Outstanding Alumni Achievement is presented annually by the UNCG-LIS Alumni Association to a graduate of the UNCG Department of Library and Information Studies who has made significant contributions to libraries, library users, and Information Studies. The award honors former faculty member Dr. Bea Kovacs and recognizes individuals whose service to community and career achievements reflect those exemplified by Dr. Kovacs. Among these achievements are:

  • Exceptional service to the users of libraries and school media centers
  • Innovative and creative leadership that benefits colleagues, institutions, and professional organizations
  • Scholarly excellence in research and publication
  • Excellence in the education and mentoring of future librarians

The Kovacs Award carries on a tradition which originated with the UNCG-LIS Alumni Association’s Outstanding Alumna / Alumnus Award. The award was officially renamed during ceremonies honoring Dr. Kovacs at the alumni luncheon on April 21, 2007. We will honor the next receipient at our Alumni Luncheon on April 16, 2011.

Alumna publication!

I would like to congratulate April Everett on the publication of her article titled Benefits and Challenges of Fun in the Workplace.  April expanded on an article she wrote for her management class with Dr. Richard Moniz.

In the same journal issue Dr. Moniz published Communicating Who We Are:  The Theory of Organizational Culture in the Workplace

Laura Willes Bowers (1995): School Library Media Coordinator, Westwood Elementary School West Jefferson, NC; In 2007, I was recognized by SMART Technologies as a SMART Exemplary Educator. As a SEE, I was accepted (along with 50 other educators from the US and Canada) to attend a weeklong Summit in Calgary, Canada at SMART’s headquarters from July 25-30, 2010. During this Summit, I learned more about SMART products and how to use them to make learning more meaningful and interactive for students.
